The runners are the problem. A generic cover sized for a static chair drags on the runner ends, catches in the rocker curve, and tears at the corners by month two.
ZIPCovers cuts custom rocking chair covers with the runner geometry built into the pattern — hem stops short of the runner tips, drawstring lifts the cover off the rocking arc, and reinforced corner panels handle the spots where a stock outdoor rocking chair cover wears through first. Eleven rocker styles supported, ZIP Armor (10-year warranty) for year-round outdoor, ZIP Shield (7-year warranty) for seasonal porch use.
A static outdoor chair has four legs that plant in the same spot every day. The cover hem hangs at one fixed height, and the bottom of the cover never sees the ground.
A rocking chair has two curved runners with the lowest point in the middle and the highest points at the front and back. The hem of a generic cover hangs lower than the runner ends and drags on the porch floor when the chair rocks back. It catches under the curve when the chair rocks forward. By the third month of use, the hem is frayed and the corners have split.
Our rocking chair covers solve it with a tailored hem cut that lifts at the runner ends and drops only where the runner is closest to the floor. Drawstring closure at the base keeps the cover snug regardless of rocker position. Reinforced corner panels handle the points where the runners contact the cover when the chair sits at its rest position.
Rocking chair design ranges from a classic wooden porch rocker to a modern shell-shaped ergonomic rocker. The runner geometry, the back profile, and the arm shape all change the cover cut.
Style 1 (Rocking Armchair), Style 2 (Classic Wooden), Style 3 (Outdoor Patio), and Style 10 (Classic Tufted) all share the traditional porch-rocker profile — wood or wicker frame, high curved back, broad arms, gentle runner arc. The cover is cut to follow the back curve with a longer hem at the front than the back.
Style 4 (Wheel Shape), Style 6 (Modern Shell), Style 7 (Modern), and Style 9 (Modern Ergonomic) all have non-traditional shell or wheel shapes. The cover follows the sculpted curve in a single seam — no flat panels, no rain pockets at the back of the shell.
Style 5 (Foldable Rocking Chair) gets a two-position cover sized for the chair in its open-and-locked rocking position. Style 8 (Upholstered High-Back) gets a taller cover with reinforced headrest panels. Style 11 (Cushion Padded Recliner Rocker) gets a longer cover that wraps the footrest in its resting position, with a vented top panel for the cushion underneath.
Glider chairs (the ones that move on a horizontal track instead of a curved runner) and porch gliders (the multi-seat versions) follow the same cover logic as rocking chairs. The base mechanism is different, but the hem rule is the same — cover has to clear the moving base without dragging or catching.
If you have a glider rather than a rocker, send the make and the dimensions and we cut a cover with the right hem profile. The category page lives under rocking chairs because the cover patterns share construction details.
Rocking chairs typically live on a porch or a covered patio — partial weather exposure, daily sun, regular dust. The 18 oz PVC-coated 1000 Denier polyester we use handles all of it. Waterproof on the outside, mildew-resistant against the cushion side, UV-stabilized so the fabric color holds through years of porch sun.
Construction details specific to rocking chairs: tailored hem that lifts at the runner ends, drawstring closure for snug fit through the rocker motion, reinforced corner panels where the runners contact the cover at rest, double-stitched back spine, and vented top panels so humidity rises out instead of pooling against an upholstered seat.
ZIP Armor is the right call for rocking chairs left on open porches or fully exposed patios year-round, especially in coastal or high-UV climates. 10-year warranty.
