When the legs are protected by something else (a built-in patio base, a fixed pedestal, an awning), and only the table surface needs covering, a top-only cover is the right call.

Most outdoor table covers wrap the entire table — top, legs, and any cross-bracing. Sometimes that is the right answer. Sometimes a top-only cover does the job better.
Top-only covers fit when the legs are already protected — built-in patio bases that do not weather, fixed concrete or stone pedestals, awning-covered spots where the legs stay dry but the surface still collects pollen and bird droppings, or banquet-style tables where the legs fold underneath and stay stored separately.
They also fit when access matters more than full coverage. A bistro table on a daily-use patio with a top-only cover lifts off in three seconds when someone wants to use the table. A full cover takes thirty.
Top covers are split by the shape of the surface they protect.
Dome-cut cover sized to the diameter of the round top, with a tailored hem that wraps the edge by a couple of inches. Drawstring or elastic hem keeps the cover snug against the underside of the table rim. Common on bistro tables, round dining tops, side tables, and patio café tables.
Cut to length and width with a tailored hem that wraps the long-side edge. Reinforced corner panels at the four corners — the spots that wear first on a top-only cover, because corners catch wind and lift first. Common on dining tables, prep tables, console tables, and outdoor work surfaces.
Same construction as a rectangle at a smaller scale. Common on game tables, four-top patio tables, and outdoor café tables. The tighter corner radius needs the same reinforced panel treatment.

For indoor dining table protection (preventing scratches on a polished hardwood table from everyday use), the right product is a clear vinyl pad or a felt-backed table pad, not a PVC-coated outdoor cover. Our covers go on top of an outdoor table to shield it from sun, rain, pollen, and debris between uses. They are not meant to sit between a table and a dinner plate.
Outdoor table tops fail at the surface in different ways depending on the material. Glass tops show every water spot and pollen smear, and lose their clarity under UV-driven micro-pitting after enough summers. Wood tops absorb moisture at the grain ends and check (crack along the grain) when the cycle repeats too many times. Stone tops stain at anything left sitting — leaves, berries, sap.
