A pergola without side panels is a sunshade — and only until late afternoon. Once the sun drops, it comes in sideways: glare on the west-facing seats, heat on the diners, and a clear view of your patio from the neighbor's kitchen window. The structure is fine. It just isn't finished.
ZIPCovers finishes it. We sew custom Sunbrella outdoor curtains to your structure's exact measurements — width, drop, and panel count — in solution-dyed fabrics, every one backed by Sunbrella's 5-year colorfast warranty. Measure once, pick a fabric, and hang panels that fit like they were built with the pergola. Because they were built for it.
Stock outdoor panels come in three lengths. Pergolas don't.
Big-box panels ship at 84, 96, or 108 inches. Your beam-to-deck drop is whatever your builder made it — 91 inches, 103, 118. Hang a stock panel and you either watch fabric pool on the deck and stay damp until noon, or stare at a gap above the rail. Post spacing repeats the problem sideways: too narrow and the panels never close, too wide and they flap.
Our custom Sunbrella curtains are sewn to the numbers you send us. Exact width, exact drop, panel count matched to the bays of your structure. Pergolas, gazebos, cabanas, covered porches, balconies, poolside pavilions, outdoor kitchens — if it has posts and an opening, we can close it with outdoor Sunbrella drapes cut for it. Sunbrella pergola curtains that actually meet in the middle. Sunbrella patio curtains that skim the deck instead of dragging across it.
Most ""outdoor"" fabric is ordinary polyester with a coating and a marketing budget. The color sits on the surface, so the sun takes it first — one summer of full exposure and the panels turn chalky, streaked, and thin.
Sunbrella works differently. It is a solution-dyed acrylic: pigment goes into the liquid acrylic before the fiber is ever spun, so every strand carries color through its full thickness. Sun can't peel off what isn't a layer. That's why Sunbrella backs the fabric with a 5-year colorfast manufacturer warranty — and why we build every curtain in this collection from it.
The performance list is short and honest:
• Solution-dyed color, warranted colorfast for 5 years
• Highly water-repellent — a fluorocarbon finish makes water bead up and roll off
• Breathable woven acrylic that resists rot instead of trapping moisture
ZIPCovers is the protective sister brand of ZIPCushions — the same Maria-founded workshop that has sewn made-to-measure pieces for 75,000+ homes and holds a 4.9-star Google rating. Curtains are what we make when a structure, not a sofa, needs the protection.
What Solution-Dyed" Actually Means
A radish is red on the outside and white underneath — scrape it and the color is gone. A carrot is orange to the core. Surface-dyed polyester is the radish: pigment coats the finished fiber and wears away. Solution-dyed Sunbrella is the carrot. Color is locked in while the acrylic is still liquid, so scrubbing, abrasion, and years of UV leave it where it started.
Sunbrella outdoor curtains handle every weather change without babysitting. Water beads up and rolls off the fluorocarbon finish, so a sprinkler pass or a splash from the pool dries without leaving a mark. The weave breathes, letting humidity escape instead of settling into the fabric and rotting it from the inside. Pollen and cookout residue rinse off with a garden hose; for anything stubborn, mild soap and a soft brush. That is the entire maintenance routine. No takedown schedule, no re-treatment sprays.
The comparison is short:
• Fit. We sew to your measured width and drop. Big-box panels come in three stock lengths and one shrug.
• Color life. Solution-dyed acrylic with a 5-year colorfast warranty, against surface-dyed polyester that chalks in a season or two.
• Moisture. Highly water-repellent and breathable, against coatings that crack and weaves that hold damp.
• Options. Grommet, tab-top, or rod-pocket headers, tiebacks, optional weighted hems, and 92 fabrics — against whatever the shelf holds in August. That is what custom curtains are supposed to mean.
Ordering custom Sunbrella outdoor curtains takes five steps:
1. Measure the width post-to-post for every opening you want to close.
2. Measure the drop from the beam or rod down to where the hem should land — skimming the deck, or clearing it by an inch.
3. Count your panels: one per bay, pairs where you want a center split, a full-perimeter set to wrap every side.
4. Pick your fabric and options — color, header style, tiebacks, weighted hems for windy or exposed installs.
5. Submit your measurements. We sew to your numbers and ship across the USA.
Measure twice — we cut once, literally. If a dimension has you second-guessing, send a photo of the structure to sales@zipcovers.com or call +1 720-882-0756 before you order.
